OVAL Adapt vs. Eight Sleep Pod 6: Full Comparison (2026)

If you sleep hot, this probably sounds familiar. Blanket off. One foot out. Five minutes later you’re cold, and the blanket goes back on. Share a bed, and you may find yourselves adjusting the covers for different temperature needs.

Bed cooling used to mean “my side vs. your side.” Eight Sleep built its business on solving that two-sleeper problem. Now OVAL Adapt is going after a more specific one: What if your upper body feels too warm while your feet stay cold?

Here’s how these two water-based bed cooling systems compare—and how to choose the right one for your needs.

Which One Fits You?

Work through it in this order: can it physically go on your bed, what kind of temperature mismatch you have, then cost and risk.

If you... Consider Why
Own an adjustable bed base Eight Sleep OVAL Adapt can't be used on adjustable beds. Eight Sleep sells its own adjustable Base; ask Eight Sleep about other brands
Have a Twin, Full or Cal King bed Eight Sleep OVAL Adapt only comes in Queen and King now
Have a tight bed frame or small bedroom Eight Sleep Its Hub (the control unit) is about 8 in tall and fits under most beds; OVAL's stands about 18.7 in tall next to the bed
Share a bed and only disagree side to side Either Both let each person set their own side
Run hot on top and cold on your feet, alone or with a partner OVAL Adapt It can set your upper and lower body to different temperatures; Eight Sleep sets one temperature per side
Want automatic overnight temperature control without a paid plan OVAL Adapt It's included free; Eight Sleep requires a paid plan (Autopilot)
Sleep alone and want the lowest entry price Eight Sleep Pod 6 Solo

Pod 6 Solo, a single-zone cover, starts at $1,999.

Want more time to decide OVAL Adapt 100-night trial with free returns vs.
Eight Sleep’s 30-night trial.
Think blankets, a fan or a cheaper pad might fix it Try those first Both systems cost about $3,000 for a Queen, so rule out cheaper fixes before buying

Step 1: Hard Limits (Will It Fit Your Bed?)

These are yes-or-no questions, so settle them before anything else.

  • Adjustable base. OVAL's Help Center lists adjustable beds and adjustable bed frames, along with waterbeds, sofa beds and bunk beds, under "do not use on." Eight Sleep sells its own adjustable Base but publishes no guidance on third-party frames. If you own one, ask Eight Sleep in writing before buying.
  • Bed size. OVAL comes in Queen and King only. Eight Sleep adds Full and Cal King in dual-zone, plus single-zone Solo covers for Twin, Twin XL, or one side of a larger bed.
  • Mattress thickness. OVAL lists 9.4-15.7 inches (24–40 cm). If your mattress is thinner or thicker, ask support before ordering.
  • Hub space. OVAL’s manual says to stand the Hub upright on the floor near the head of the bed, with 8–12 inches of clearance around it for ventilation. Eight Sleep says its Pod 6 Hub is about 8 inches tall and fits under most bed frames. In a small bedroom, measure first.

Step 2: Four Zones vs. Two, the Biggest Difference

Most smart bed cooling systems offer dual-zone control: warmer on one side, cooler on the other. But what happens when the temperature clash is happening inside your own body?

We’ve all been there: your upper body feels overheated, but your feet are cold, so you stick one leg out from under the blanket to balance out.

That is the exact difference between Eight Sleep Pod 6 (Dual-Zone) and OVAL Adapt (Four-Zone):

  • Two zones: each side of the bed gets its own temperature, which solves a disagreement between two sleepers.
  • Four zones: each side is split into an upper-body zone and a lower-body zone, which also solves a disagreement inside one body.

The Physiology Behind It

Research links faster sleep onset to heat loss through the hands and feet (Kräuchi et al., Nature, 1999). In other words, your body doesn’t always want the same temperature from head to toe.

OVAL Adapt divides each side of the bed into separate upper and lower body zones, automatically adapting as you shift through sleep cycles. You can run a cooler chest and warmer feet at the same time, with less reason to kick off the covers.

Which one do you need?

OVAL Adapt covers both cases: each person still controls their own side, and each side can also be split between upper and lower body. So if your clash is only side to side, either system works and you can decide on size, cost and membership.

If you also kick the covers off or dangle one foot out of bed, only OVAL Adapt gives you that extra control, which is the reason to consider it as an Eight Sleep alternative.

See how OVAL Adapt's four zones work.

Temperature range: OVAL lists a wider range (54–118°F vs. 55–110°F). These are device settings; how the bed actually feels depends on your room temperature and bedding.

Step 3: Calculating the Real 5-Year Cost

Comparing hardware prices alone is the most common mistake when evaluating bed cooling systems. Because recurring memberships play a major role in how these devices function, the checkout price on Day 1 is not your total long-term investment.

Before comparing costs, keep these two critical membership rules in mind:

  • Eight Sleep Pod 6 has a mandatory 1-year subscription: Every Pod 6 requires an Autopilot plan at purchase, bringing day-one costs for a Queen to $3,098–$3,298. If you cancel after Year 1, you lose all smart features—including automated temperature scheduling, sleep tracking, and Autopilot adjustments—leaving you with only basic real-time temperature control via on-device buttons or manual app inputs.
  • OVAL Adapt includes a free Core plan: You get automatic temperature adjustments and basic sleep tracking for $0/year as long as you own the system. An upgraded Plus plan ($199/year) is optional for advanced metrics.

*Note:

Extended OVAL Care is a one-time $599 add-on, not an annual fee, and it stays in place whether or not you subscribe to Plus.

On Eight Sleep, the 5-year warranty comes only with the Enhanced or Elite plan, so you need to keep paying for that plan for all five years to stay covered.

Enhanced ($299/yr) has the same features as Standard plus the longer warranty;

Elite ($399/yr) adds Health Check, Eight Sleep’s cardiovascular and respiratory monitoring.

Which Path Matches Your Needs?

  1. You want automatic overnight temperature control without recurring fees: Choose OVAL Adapt on the Core Plan ($2,999 total). It keeps automatic adjustments active for all five years without charging you another dollar. Eight Sleep's cheapest option costs $3,098, but leaves you with manual controls after year one.

  2. You plan to pay for a premium subscription anyway: Over five years, OVAL Plus ($3,994) and Eight Sleep Standard ($3,894) are within $100 of each other. Choose based on features: Eight Sleep adds snoring detection and a vibration alarm; OVAL Plus adds pre-sleep cooling/heating and daytime recovery scores. Both include HRV.

  3. You want 5 years of hardware warranty protection: Extended OVAL Care ($3,598 total) provides five years of coverage as a simple one-time add-on that includes filter replacements and accidental damage. Eight Sleep’s 5-year coverage requires keeping an Enhanced or Elite plan active, bringing the five-year total to $4,394–$4,894.

Step 4: Assessing Your Risk (Trial & Warranty)

When buying high-end smart bedding, hardware performance is only half the story. The rest comes down to trial periods, warranty rules, and real-world reliability.

Quick Risk Comparison

Risk factor OVAL Adapt Eight Sleep Pod 6 Why it matters for you
Sleep trial 100 nights (free returns) 30 nights (free returns) It takes time to get used to sleeping on an active thermal layer. A longer trial gives you more buffer.
Standard warranty 2 years limited (from delivery) 2 years (with Standard plan) Basic hardware protection against manufacturing defects for both devices.
5-year protection $599 one-time add-on (Extended OVAL Care) Requires an Enhanced or Elite plan OVAL’s coverage is a fixed one-time fee; Eight Sleep requires keeping a higher-tier annual plan active ($1,495+ over five years).

3 Things You Must Know Before Buying

  • Trial Period: Why 100 Nights beats 30 Nights

Adapting to active temperature control doesn't happen in a weekend. OVAL Adapt’s 100-night trial gives you over three months to test seasonal changes, whereas Eight Sleep’s 30-night window leaves less room for error if you're on the fence. Both offer free return shipping.

  • Warranty Catch: Fixed Fee vs. Subscription Lock

OVAL Adapt: You can lock in 5 years of hardware protection (plus accidental damage coverage and replacement filters) for a single $599 add-on, without needing a recurring subscription.

Eight Sleep: 5-year coverage is tied directly to their Enhanced ($1,495 total over 5 yrs) or Elite ($1,995 total over 5 yrs) membership plans. Enhanced has the same features as Standard, so the longer warranty effectively costs $100 a year more, and only while you keep paying. Cancel or drop to Standard, and the extended warranty ends.

  • Track Record: Established Line vs. Newer Alternative

Eight Sleep’s advantage: It’s a sixth-generation system with years of press coverage and owner feedback, so there’s a long public record to check before you buy.

OVAL’s advantage: OVAL Adapt is newer, so it has less long-term owner history. It makes up for that with stronger buyer protection: a 100-night trial with free returns, a 2-year warranty that doesn’t depend on a subscription, and optional Extended OVAL Care, which adds 5-year coverage including accidental damage. That gives you more than three months to decide, and more ways to stay covered after that.

💡 Buyer's Tip: Regardless of which model you choose, inspect the water lines, connectors, and central Hub for moisture during your first few weeks of setup.

Step 5: Everyday Use

Beyond pricing and specs, your daily satisfaction comes down to four practical factors: controls when Wi-Fi drops, noise and feel, sensor accuracy, and partner data sharing.

Everyday Experience Summary

Factor OVAL Adapt Eight Sleep Pod 6  Impact
Physical Controls Buttons on both sides of the Layer Side controls on the cover Change temperatures directly from bed without picking up your phone.
If Wi-Fi drops Use the buttons on the Layer to change temperature. No phone or internet needed. After about 5 minutes offline, Backup Mode switches to Bluetooth. Use the buttons on the Cover, or the app with your phone near the Hub, to turn the Pod on or off and change temperature. Autopilot pauses until Wi-Fi returns. Both keep basic temperature control without Wi-Fi. Smart features on both depend on a connection.
Noise Rating Rated ≤36 dB Not published Quiet operation, but actual noise varies by cooling load.
Data Privacy (Couples) Linking accounts shares membership benefits only; each person’s sleep data stays private Linking accounts lets partners see each other’s sleep and health data Decide whether you want your partner to see your sleep data. On Eight Sleep, linking accounts means they will. On OVAL, it stays private.

4 Key Daily Considerations

1. Offline Control (When Wi-Fi Drops)

  • Both products have on-bed controls, so you don’t need your phone at 3 a.m., and both keep basic temperature control when the internet goes down.
  • OVAL Adapt: The buttons on both sides of the Layer keep working without internet. App control and sleep data return when you reconnect.
  • Eight Sleep: After about 5 minutes offline, Backup Mode switches the Pod to Bluetooth. You can use the buttons on the Cover, or the app with your phone near the Hub, to turn it on or off and change temperature. Autopilot pauses until Wi-Fi returns.

2. Noise & Thickness

  • Noise: OVAL quotes a quiet 36 dB noise rating, while Eight Sleep doesn't publish decibel numbers.
  • Feel: Eight Sleep’s cover is roughly 1 inch thick; OVAL does not list exact thickness.

Pro Tip: Use your trial period to test two things on max cooling: whether you can hear the pump from your pillow, and whether you can feel the water tubing under your body.

3. Sensor

  • Both devices use sensors built into the bed layer to track your sleep, so you don’t need a watch or band.

4. Privacy & Partner Data Sharing

  • Eight Sleep: Linking partner accounts grants mutual access to view each other’s detailed health and sleep data.
  • OVAL Adapt: Linked accounts only share subscription plan benefits, keeping individual sleep metrics private.

Where Eight Sleep Has the Edge

To be fair to the incumbent, Eight Sleep leads in several places:

  • Sizes. Full and Cal King, plus Solo covers starting at $1,999 for one sleeper or one side of a bed.
  • Hub and bed compatibility. A smaller Hub that fits under most frames, and its own adjustable Base.
  • Track record. Sixth-generation product line with years of owner feedback.
  • Software extras. Launch coverage lists snoring detection and a vibration and thermal alarm among Autopilot's features, plus Pregnancy Mode and Biological Age.

FAQ

Do you have to pay a subscription for Eight Sleep?

Yes, for the first 12 months. Every Pod 6 comes with an Autopilot commitment at $199, $299 or $399 a year. After Year 1, you can cancel the subscription, but you will lose Autopilot adjustments, timed temperature schedules, and health tracking, leaving only real-time manual temperature toggles.

Does OVAL Adapt require a subscription?

No. The free Core plan includes app and manual control, adaptive temperature during sleep, and basic sleep metrics. The optional Plus Membership ($199 a year) adds pre-sleep adjustment, HRV, sleep stages and daytime recovery insights.

What's the difference between two-zone and four-zone bed cooling?

A two-zone system sets one temperature per side of the bed. A four-zone system also splits each side into upper and lower body zones, so you can cool your torso while warming your feet. If you only disagree with your partner, two zones may be enough. For a deeper comparison, see Four-Zone vs. Dual-Zone Cooling.

How much does each cost over five years?

For a Queen at list price over five years: OVAL Adapt is $2,999 on its free Core plan, or $3,994 if you pay for Plus every year. Eight Sleep Pod 6 is $3,098 if you take Standard for the required first year and then cancel (leaving manual control only), or $3,894, $4,394 or $4,894 if you keep Standard, Enhanced or Elite for all five years.

Can I use either one on an adjustable bed?

Not OVAL Adapt, per its Help Center. Eight Sleep sells its own adjustable Base designed for the Pod; for other adjustable frames, ask Eight Sleep before buying.

What is a good Eight Sleep alternative without a subscription?

If you want a bed cooling system without a mandatory subscription, or your problem is an upper-body and lower-body mismatch that two zones can't fix, OVAL Adapt is the alternative built for it: four zones, with automatic temperature control and basic sleep tracking included free.
